I follow this routine alongside my morning toothbrushing
Oil pulling:
It is well known that toothbrushing by itself is not enough to maintain oral hygiene, which is why many people resort to antiseptic mouthwashes. I have adopted an ancient but very effective natural method of removing bacteria from the mouth, which I follow almost on a daily basis alongside tongue cleaning. It is called “oil pulling”, a practice that originated in Ayurveda and has been tested for over 3,000 years!
As effective as a mouthwash
Oil pulling, which in traditional Indian medicine is called “Kavala Graha”, is essentially washing the mouth with oil. Recent scientific research has confirmed the effectiveness of this ancient practice in the fight against gingivitis, caries and the bacteria responsible for bad breath.
In addition, it has been found that oil pulling strengthens and moisturizes the gums and increases saliva production, which also contributes to the reduction of bacteria. In fact, studies have shown that the oil pulling method is as effective in fighting oral bacteria and treating bad breath as washing with a common antiseptic mouthwash with chlorhexidine.
How does “oil pulling” work?
Most microorganisms that live inside the mouth are unicellular. Each unique cell is surrounded by a fatty membrane, which is the skin of the cell. When these cells come into contact with an oil particle, they attach to it. This is what we do with oil pulling. As we swish the oil around, bacteria and toxins become incorporated into it, and we can easily eliminate them immediately afterwards. In fact, as we spit out the oil, we will notice that it has become more fluid and milky, proof of its antibacterial action!
Tips for oil pulling
- Keep the oil in your mouth for about 10 minutes: Swish the oil around the tongue and teeth for about 10 minutes. If 10 minutes seems like a lot at first, start with less and gradually increase the duration, distracting yourself with some other morning work (eg preparing breakfast, checking e-mail, etc.).
- Do not swallow: If you feel a strong urge to swallow it, then you probably had a big sip. One tablespoon is enough, since as long as you swish it, saliva is excreted and added to the total amount. It should not be swallowed, as you will also swallow the bacteria contained therein. Also, avoid spitting it in the washbasin or bathtub, because it can clog the sink. Use the toilet bowl or the trash can instead.
- Use organic oils: You can use any oil we want, but it is very important to choose organic cold pressed oils, and not processed oils, as they are healthier. I prefer organic sunflower oil as it has a neutral taste and lasts longer. One litre is enough for about 3 months of daily use! But you can also use organic sesame oil or organic coconut oil, which contains extra lauric acid and stands out for its antimicrobial agents.
- Clean your tongue and teeth: Oil pulling cannot replace daily toothbrushing and tongue cleaning. After oil pulling, rinse your mouth with plenty of water and continue normally with toothbrushing, flossing and tongue cleaning.
